The EPH Department is responsible for teaching courses in the fields of optics, electronics, and microwave engineering at Telecom SudParis (in collaboration with the CITI Department). The department also teaches courses in pattern recognition and image processing (also in collaboration with the CITI Department). The department also organizes various lifelong learning courses and industry-focused seminars in these areas of expertise.

Our research primarily addresses digital sovereignty and sustainability, particularly through our research and technology transfer activities in data science, artificial intelligence, and future communication networks. AI systems are developed in line with a national strategy that focuses on scientific and technical priorities designed to meet the requirements for digital trust and resource efficiency associated with these technologies. Our research on photonic neuromorphic computing closely aligns with these AI challenges, particularly the need for AI to be environmentally efficient to address the challenge of responsible digital technology. Our future research aims to develop AI models designed to use resources efficiently and operate in constrained environments.

The second major challenge concerns sustainable development and, more specifically, the optimal use of our energy resources as part of the energy transition. For example, the digital industry, including the manufacture and use of digital equipment, currently accounts for 3% to 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that has steadily increased in recent years. The ecological transition in the digital sector requires an understanding of its environmental impact, the promotion of more resource-efficient and responsible digital practices, and the use of digital technology to support the broader ecological transition Part of our research focuses on the appropriate and responsible use of our resources. The first area involves the recovery of electromagnetic energy to power low-power connected devices. This is now a key challenge in the sustainable development of the Internet of Things (IoT). The second area focuses on cognitive radio, which uses predictive models to optimize and maintain connectivity in communication networks and enable efficient frequency-spectrum management for next-generation mobile networks and IoT systems.

Digitization in the healthcare sector is also a major challenge for the years ahead. This digital transformation, which will rely on technologies such as the IoT and AI and is included in the Health Innovation Plan (France 2030). It represents a real opportunity to develop early diagnosis solutions using innovative medical devices to effectively assist healthcare professionals. Our research in this area includes developing digital biomarkers, super-resolution optical imaging systems based on sensor-algorithm co-design combined with neural approaches to image processing, and innovative sensors based on UWB technology for sleep apnea detection.

The department draws on the expertise of a team of around twenty faculty members and a management coordinator. Each year, the department welcomes around ten doctoral students and fifteen interns from engineering schools, master’s programs, Master of Science programs, etc.

Members of the EPh department are members of the SAMOVAR laboratory.
