🏥 Health Coverage and Insurance in France
📋 How and when to register
International students staying in France for more than three months must register for French health insurance after arriving in France and once their enrolment in a higher education institution has been completed. Registration should be completed as early as possible at the beginning of the academic year in order to avoid delays in the activation of healthcare rights.
The first step is to register online through the dedicated platform for international students. Applicants will be asked to provide supporting documents, which may include:
- A valid passport
- Visa or residence permit
- Proof of enrolment
- A full birth certificate (with a certified translation if required)
- French bank account details (RIB)
Once the application has been validated and a French social security number has been issued, students can then create a personal account on the Ameli website. This account allows them to monitor reimbursements, download certificates, update personal information, and manage their health insurance online.
Please visit the Ameli page and Campus France page for more information.

💡 Tips: Please note that you will need to provide a birth certificate translated into French and that you must open a bank account before completing this step.

Registration to the French National Healthcare known as « Sécurité Sociale » is free and mandatory for non-European students. This will allow you to benefit from partial refund on your healthcare expenses, on average 60%.
💊 Mutuelle (Supplementary Health Insurance)
A mutuelle is supplementary health insurance that helps cover medical costs not fully reimbursed by the French public health system. It can reduce or eliminate the amount you have to pay for doctor visits, medicines, or hospital care. It is optional, but strongly recommended for international students.
