Each year, British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) publishes one of the world’s most prestigious, influential university rankings. Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) features in 6th place in this year’s ranking of international universities under 50 years oldIP Paris and Paris Sciences et Lettres are the only French establishments to appear in the top 10 of the best young universities in the world.

IP Paris brings together five founding engineering schools - École Polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris and Telecom SudParis - under a single banner. Since its creation in 2019, IP Paris has sought to represent French excellence in teaching and research in various international rankings.

In a press release from February 15 2022, the Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation specifies that “it [the ranking] also reinforces the positive impact of the future investment program (PIA3 and 4), the Recovery Plan and the confirmation of the IDEXs and I-SITEs”.

France, the most represented country in the top 20

In total, the 2022 THE Young University Rankings evaluated 539 universities from 74 countries all over the world. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industrial income (knowledge transfer).
Hong Kong features three establishments in the top 10, more than any other country, while France is the most represented country in the top 20, with five establishments on the list.

Why does the 2022 THE Young University Rankings matter?

When thinking about internationally renowned universities, centuries-old institutions immediately come to mind, like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Princeton.
But many other establishments also deserve our attention. The 2022 THE Young University Rankings recognizes the best universities under 50 years old, evaluating them in terms of teaching, research, international spirit and collaboration with industry.

The rankings are based on the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but the weightings were recalibrated to give less importance to reputation. And let us not forget that IP Paris was ranked 91st in the 2022 THE World University Rankings, where 1,600 universities from 99 countries were evaluated.
