SAMOVAR : TIPIC seminar

SAMOVAR TIPIC team organize a seminar "Information Hiding : A tutorial information theory viewpoint", hosted by Phillip Regalia, on thursday, january 19th, from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm in room A04-01.

Abstract:

Information hiding is a more recent viewpoint of watermarking, which exploits information theory to deduce fundamental limits on how much information can be hidden in a cover signal, subject to distortion constraints from embedding, and resilience due to signal degradation.

Applications range from copyright protection, fingeprinting, embedding confidential patient information in medical images, and other areas of stenography.

This talk presents a tutorial overview of recent results in information hiding stemming from an information theoretic viewpoint, along with coding techniques which are adapted to information hiding, including dirty paper coding and nested lattice codes.

Gaps between theoretically achievable embedding capacity and practical attainable methods are emphasized, and relations to cryptography as well as high-capacity multi-user communications are likewise reviewed.

Visit of Associate Professor Francis Lee Bu Sung for a conference "Social Media: Detection the buzz"

On 21rst of october, Associate Professor Francis Lee Bu Sung will give a conference on "Social Media: detection the buzz" on Telecom SudParis Campus.

Social Media: Detection the "buzz"

Over the part few years we have seen the power of Social Media in all aspect of our life, ranging from personal to business to politics. Social networking sites, like Facebook, Twitter and G are now household name. Social Media has changed the way netizen communicate with each other and how we get the news. However, it comes with a great price, ie data overload and with lots of "babbles". There is so much data and making sense out of the data is a major challenge facing the research community.

The talk will cover an interesting way to detect "hot topics" in new media using wavelet analysis. Words with similar frequency patterns are clustered together to form events with a modularity-based graph partitioning technique. A prototype system was build recently for the Singapore general election where we measure the political parties sentiment and hot topics.
The results have been very promising and has attracted much attention.

SAMOVAR seminar R3S "Variations around Presence Service : Interoperability, Virtualization and End-user Applications"

Presence service enables the publication and discovery of context information. It is the basis of a very wide range of end-user applications. The IETF has proposed an abstract presence model that has led to a plethora of non-interoperable standard and proprietary implementations, raising major interoperability issues. Furthermore, these implementations are usually monolithic with little room for substrate re-use.

This presentation highlights selected recent developments in the presence area with a focus on interoperability, re-use of substrates through virtualization, and novel presence based - end-user applications.

The two approaches we have recently proposed to bridge presence service across technologies for interoperability purpose are sketched. The first is centralized and relies on Restful Web services, while the second is decentralized and relies on peer to peer overlays.

The architecture of our virtualized presence service that enables re-use of presence substrates across standard and proprietary presence implementations is briefly introduced. It is a three layers (virtual presence service, presence virtualization and presence substrate) and a two planes (service, signalling)architecture.

Entities may wish to interact with other entities that need to be discovered dynamically. The novel presence-based end-user look up service we have recently prototyped for this very purpose is also discussed.

Thursday 19th of May, Telecom SudParis welcome Mr Alonso Silva, INRIA Paris Rocquencourt, for a workshop about "Spatial games and global optimization for the mobile association problem".

Abstract :

"We study the mobile association problem : the determination of the cells corresponding to each base station, i.e, the locations at which intelligent mobile terminals prefer to connect to a given base station rather than to others.

We propose an approach based on optimal transport theory to characterize the solution based on previous works on fluid approximations.

We characterize the optimal solution from both the global network and the individual user points of view."

Lab SAMOVAR Seminar

SAMOVAR Lab of Telecom SudParis host Fabio Martignon, University of Bergamo (Italy), Wednesday, January 26 at 2:00 PM in Room F209, for a seminar on the routing and efficients management schemes of spectrum in multi-hop wireless networks.

Abstract:

Wireless mesh networks have emerged as a flexible and low-cost network infrastructure, fostering the development of new network paradigms such as wireless mesh community networks (WMCNs).

In the first part of this talk, I will focus on the routing problem in WMCNs. Several routing protocols have indeed been proposed to improve the packet delivery rate based on enhanced metrics that capture the wireless link quality. However, these metrics ignore that some nodes can exhibit a selfish forwarding behavior to increase their own network utilization. In this regard, I will illustrate a novel and effective
routing metric which combines, in a cross-layer fashion, routing and MAC layer observations to select the most reliable and high-performance path.

In the second part of the talk I will consider dynamic spectrum access techniques, which permit to further increase the wireless network performance. To this aim, I will focus on the dynamic spectrum access problem in wireless networks equipped with cognitive radio technology, using a game theoretical perspective.

ITU-T Kaleidoscope event, Pune, India, 13-15 Dec 2010

Beyond the Internet? - Innovations for future networks and services - is the third in a series of peer-reviewed academic conferences that aims at increasing the dialogue between experts working on the standardization of information and communications technologies (ICTs) and academia. By viewing technologies through a “Kaleidoscope”, these forward looking events also seek to identify new topics for standardization.

Thus far, the Internet has proven to be robust and flexible and its continuous evolution has seen growth from a small experiment into a giant collaborative network capable of meeting the demands of more than one billion users. The rise of mobile access and its integration with optical transport networks present new challenges. Some experts question whether the current underlying architecture is sufficiently robust to address future demands or if a “clean slate” approach is needed to develop a really innovative Internet of the future.

Kaleidoscope 2010 will highlight multidisciplinary aspects of future Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) including future services and applications demand as well as social and economic impacts. The focus will be on innovative technologies and contributors might have to challenge the fundamental networking design principles of the Internet.

This academic conference is calling for original papers, from the world’s universities, industry and academic institutions. Accepted papers will be made available through the IEEE Xplore. A prize fund totaling $10,000 will be awarded by the three best papers. Young Author Recognition certificates will be also issued.

Prof. Noel Crespi, from Telecom SudParis and senior member of IEEE, is member of Program Comitee.

7th International Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (ATC'2010)

Ubiquitous sensors, devices, networks and information are paving the way
towards a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed
throughout the physical environment to provide reliable and relevant
services to people. This ubiquitous intelligence will change the computing
landscape because it will enable new breeds of applications and systems to
be developed and the realm of computing possibilities will be significantly
extended. By enhancing everyday objects with intelligence, many tasks and
processes could be simplified, the physical spaces where people interact
like the workplaces and homes, could become more efficient, safer and more
enjoyable. Ubiquitous computing, or pervasive computing, uses these many
"smart things or u-things" to create smart environments, services and
applications.

A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may
be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive,
adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or
thinking. Research on ubiquitous intelligence is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from
the current level of computing services to the smart world of adaptive and
intelligent services. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has
been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong, Oslo and
Brisbane. UIC 2010 will include a highly selective program of technical
papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches.
Established as a premier venue in the area of ubiquitous intelligence and
computing, UIC 2010 will offer a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and
experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments and
systems.

Talk about "Application Enablers for Challenged Networks: State of The Art and Research Directions"

Dr Roch Glitho, from Concordia University (Canada), will give a talk about "Application Enablers for Challenged Networks: State of The Art and Research Directions", 10.5 AM, at Telecom SudParis, room C06.

Abstract :
There are several assumptions underlying conventional network architectures as epitomized by the Internet TCP/IP network architecture (e.g. low error rate, symmetric bidirectional rates, bidirectional end to end path). However, more and more networks that do not meet these assumptions are being deployed (e.g. deep space networks, mobile ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks). They are known as challenged (or unusual, or non conventional) networks. This speech focuses on applications enablers for challenged networks. We propose a three dimensional taxonomy (challenged network type, application type, protocol stack levels) and use it as backbone in the presentation. The most widely deployed challenged networks are briefly reviewed. Challenged networks-agnostic application enablers (i.e. enablers that target all challenged networks) such as the IETF delay/disruption tolerant network (DTN) bundle overlay and the EU 6FP ambient control space (ACS) overlay are discussed. Challenged network specific enablers (i.e. enablers that target a specific challenged network) including multiparty session enablers for mobile ad hoc networks and middleware for wireless sensor networks are introduced. Research challenges are introduced throughout the speech.
